Top 5 Places in Indianapolis to Walk, Run, or Move Freely
At Wildflower PT & Wellness, we believe movement is one of the most powerful forms of healing — and there’s no better way to move than outdoors.
Walking, jogging, or doing light mobility work in nature not only strengthens your body but also calms your nervous system, boosts your mood, and helps you reconnect with what your body can do.
Indianapolis offers so many beautiful spaces that make movement feel good again — whether you’re easing back into activity after an injury, training for a race, or just need a break from sitting at a desk.
Here are our five favorite local places to move freely in and around Indy.
1. The Monon Trail
The Monon is a classic for a reason. Stretching over 20 miles from downtown Indianapolis up to Westfield, it’s perfect for both casual walkers and seasoned runners.
With shaded stretches, plenty of rest stops, and a lively atmosphere, it’s ideal for building mileage at your own pace. If you’re returning to running after an injury, try short jog intervals between walk breaks — the consistent terrain makes it easy to monitor how your body responds.
🌼 Wildflower tip: Mix in some mobility work or dynamic stretching before and after your walk or run. It’s a great way to keep your joints happy and prevent overuse injuries.
2. Eagle Creek Park
One of the largest city parks in the country, Eagle Creek offers miles of forested trails and lake views that make movement feel peaceful and restorative.
Whether you’re hiking, trail running, or doing bodyweight exercises outdoors, the soft terrain is easier on your joints than concrete — perfect for those recovering from knee or hip pain.
🌼 Wildflower tip: Trail walking is a great way to challenge your balance and stability muscles without feeling like “rehab.” Just watch your footing if you’re rebuilding confidence after an injury.
3. The Canal Walk Downtown
The Canal Walk offers a scenic 3-mile loop right in the heart of the city — ideal for mid-day movement breaks or low-impact recovery days.
You can walk, jog, or bike the loop, and its flat, paved path makes it accessible for all fitness levels. If you work downtown, this is the perfect “movement snack” during lunch or after work.
🌼 Wildflower tip: Try adding a few walking lunges or single-leg balance drills at intervals along your route — simple ways to strengthen your hips and improve mobility.
4. Fort Harrison State Park
If you love variety, Fort Harrison (known locally as “Fort Ben”) offers a mix of paved and natural trails surrounded by rolling hills and open fields. It’s great for runners and walkers who want a change of scenery without leaving the city.
This is also a favorite spot for Wildflower clients rebuilding endurance — the gradual inclines provide natural resistance training without the need for gym equipment.
🌼 Wildflower tip: Use the hills as “strength work.” Walking uphill builds glute and hamstring strength, which is key for preventing back, knee, and hip pain.
5. Holliday Park
Located near Broad Ripple, Holliday Park combines wooded trails, open lawns, and the iconic Ruins — creating a peaceful space for walking, mobility flows, or outdoor workouts.
It’s one of our favorite parks for clients who are transitioning from rehab to more dynamic training. The variety of terrain keeps your muscles guessing and helps restore strength and coordination in a safe, natural environment.
🌼 Wildflower tip: Bring a yoga mat and try a few gentle mobility or core exercises near the Ruins — it’s a calming spot for mindful movement. Invoke Studio has an incredible outdoor yoga program in the summer months that will leave you feeling rejuvenated and grounded once you leave the ruins. Fun fact, Wildflower is located inside of the downtown location of Invoke Studio!
